إضاءة الفرق بين A number و The number كلمة  number إذا جاء قبلها  the تدل علي وحدة وتكون مفرد  ولكن إذا جاء قبلها a فهي تعني عديد أو كثير وتكون جمع The number of pupils is increasing A number of pupils are absent today نلاحظ أنه بعد the number of يكون الفعل مفرد دائما لأن العدد يكون معروف The number of visitors is small The number of cars is increasing rapidly ولكن بعد a number of   يكون الفعل دائما جمع لأن العدد يكون غير معروف  ( لم يحسب بعد ) A number of players are still waiting A number of cars are racing at the moment
